Encounter with Jerry Afriyie

Jerry King Luther Afriyie is a poet, father and human rights activist. As a poet, Jerry can be found on large and small stages in the country: from Stadsschouwburg Amsterdam, Tivoli Vredenburg Utrecht to festivals such as Welcome to The Village in Friesland. He writes opinion pieces on social issues that affect him, and regularly appear in newspapers such as NRC Handelsblad, Het Parool, Trouw, de Volkskrant and on Joop.nl. Jerry Afriyie was born in Bechem, Ghana and has lived in the Netherlands since he was 11 years old. He is co-founder of the foundations Nederland Wordt Beter and Soul Rebel Movement. In 2011 he started the awareness campaign Zwarte Piet is Racisme (Black Pete is Racism) together with other artists. Together with Pakhuis de Zwijger and Sunny Bergman, Jerry started the Wit aan zet. Wit aan zet focuses on raising awareness of the existence of white privilege in the Netherlands and seeks solutions to the prevailing inequality in society.
